Luento käsittelee amerikansuomalaisia muusikoita ja soveltuu kulttuurintutkijoille, historioitsijoille, musiikintutkijoille sekä kaikille amerikansuomalaisuudesta laajemmin kiinnostuneille tutkijoille ja opiskelijoille. Luento on englanninkielinen ja sen järjestää folkloristiikan oppiaine.

The Upper Peninsula of Michigan has the greatest concentration of people with Finnish heritage in the United States, and has long been a hot-bed for Finnish American music. The area has produced such renowned musicians as composer Martti Nisonen and accordion virtuoso Viola Turpeinen. This lecture will survey some of the more recent Finnish American musicians who have been active in the Upper Peninsula. Much of the information presented was gathered during field trips to the region from 2008 to 2017. There are many interconnections among these musicians and with some of them back to Finland. They all have in common that they have taken the Finnish music of their heritage and have combined it with music from their current American environment. In doing so, they have created styles of music which are uniquely Finnish American and in some cases localized to the Upper Peninsula.
